Eating Breakfast

They tell us that eating breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and ‘they’ are right! This is echoed by registered dietician Keri Gans who wrote the book The Small Change Diet. I don’t mean to say that ‘breakfast’ is the most important meal, I mean to say that ‘eating breakfast’ is the most important meal of the day! It does us no good to acknowledge that we should be eating breakfast. It does us no good to acknowledge that a bowl of fruit is much better for breakfast than a sweet roll. And it does no good to argue the differences between a liquid breakfast, made up of your favorite gourmet coffee, and a bowl of cereal.

Breakfast is the meal we wake up to, it’s the energy starter of the day. Eatingbreakfast is the most important part of breakfast. Having a bowl of oatmeal is preferable a fast food breakfast sandwich. Having two or threescrambled eggs with toast is preferable to a stack of pancakes bathed in syrup. But eating breakfast is preferable to drinking breakfast. And anything you decide to eat for breakfast is preferable to no breakfast at all. This isn’t to say that having a piece of cake for breakfast every morning is healthy, we all know it isn’t. But eating a simplefast food breakfast sandwich and drinking half as much coffee will leave you feeling fuller and just as energized till lunch.

Eating Breakfast Takes 5 Minutes

How many have us use the excuse of simply not having enough time to eat breakfast? There is no such thing. We all have all the time we need for eating breakfast. Often a simple, decently nutritional breakfast takes less than 5 min. out of your morning. Eating breakfast takes me longer than that. But that’s because I choose to use my juicer every morning. I love the taste of a slice of pineapple, half a grapefruit, half an orange and a small apple juiced into a 12 ounce cup. After I have this I am ready for some scrambled eggs, or toast, or cereal, etc. I’m not into coffee, I prefer my caffeine cold. But the point here is, regardless of what our morning beverage is we still need to be eating breakfast too.

I went many years without eating breakfast. I simply didn’t feel hungry. And for those years I never stopped once to connect the fact that I often overate at lunch to make up for it. I noticed on those occasions when I did eat breakfast that I got hungrier before lunch. So this was my justification for skipping breakfast. It never dawned on me that skipping breakfast kept my metabolism at the same slow pace produced by our sleeping state,

according to Rolls/Barnett who wrote The Volumetrics Eating Plan . And therefore it kept me working at half throttle through the morning allowing my body preserved calories rather than burn them. Do you suppose these are some of the reasons why people who skip breakfast have a harder time losing weight?

Not Eating Breakfast?

Regardless of your excuse for not eating breakfast, it holds no weight (pun intended). Eating almost any breakfast is far superior to eating no breakfast. We are all adults, we have some sense of what is good for us and what is not. I simply cannot go from my mediocre to poor breakfast habits to the pinnacle of health food nirvana overnight. In fact my breakfast eating habits will never even approach health food nirvana. But what I have for breakfast is far less important than actually eating breakfast.
